I decided that a 'wyrd' series had to have a few ghosts and ghoulies. So I set about researching famous New Jersey ghosts.
There was a story about a ghost named "Emily", a happy nice ghost that roams the halls of the Flanders Hotel, in Ocean City.
The more I thought about the tragic good girl phantom, the less the story tracks.
Ghosts are the psychic manifestation of guilt, of injustice. We tell ourselves that tale of tragic injustice all the time.
So. In my head a story evolved about a less than perfect woman whose disappearance wasn’t missed (a good girl’s death would be noticed, after all).
Perhaps she was abused to death, or maybe it was accidental.
But in any case, she died and was disposed of as the object she was considered to be, and she watches to see what the fancy people get up to in this place, over the years, and waits for her justice.
And woe betide any abusive men she comes across.
In many ways, this is autobiographical in nature.
