I prefer the ocean in wintertime, because there are fewer people and I can zone out to the rhythm of the waves and watch the water world in peace. For many people, going to the beach is all about other people. Nobody stares out at the water, reflects on the vastness of the ocean, or thinks too hard about how small we are. When I was on walkabout I did a series of quick sketches of people at Hiltonhead. None of them was really paying attention to the ocean. Some were biking, some were building sandcastles, some were beachcombing, each was busy in their own little way, while infinity played loudly all around them... and perhaps watched their tiny antics. This definitely falls under "folly" to my mind. The "Neptune's Beach" title comes from my friend Jerry's frequent visits to Neptune, where he hangs out and gets into good trouble with his buddy who used to make monster movies, which is an interesting bit of kismet.
