"THE OTHER CHAIR", 1966 SIGNED ORIGINAL LIMITED EDITION COLOR SERIGRAPH PRINT BY THE AMERICAN ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER CLAYTON POND (b.1941)
This limited edition color serigraph (silkscreen print) is by the American graphic artist and master printmaker Clayton Pond, who was among the first artists to employ silkscreen printing in a fresh distinctly personal way. This silkscreen print is an excellent example of the artist’s early work. The print is signed in pencil by the artist in the margin below the image bottom center: Clayton Pond.
Titled “The Other Chair”, this silkscreen is in the collections of The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Clayton Pond printed this work at his studio in Brooklyn New York in 1966 for the publication Artist’s Proof: A Journal of American Printmaking. The nonprofit journal was published by the Pratt Graphic Art Center from 1961-1971. It was an enormous honor for the then-very-young artist to be asked to make the tipped-in frontispiece for this journal. Artist’s Proof was then the preeminent journal for contemporary printmaking and was subscribed to by art collectors, art schools, galleries, and museums. Clayton Pond hand-signed each one of the 7500 prints created for this publication.
The image size measures 8 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches, printed in vibrating colors on white wove paper, the sheet with full margins measures 9 x 7 1/4 inches. The serigraph comes archivally matted. The mat measures 16 x 13 inches.
