I painted this soon after giving birth, and going through the phases and trials of trying to breastfeed. Colostrum is the golden yellow, fat-rich milk that is produced in the first days after birth, referred to as “liquid gold” for its nutrient density. I meditated on this bodily product here, examining also the pressures I was under as a mother, as a milk-maker, and as an artist. Meanwhile I was becoming more interested in images of the monstrous feminine -- a female monster who was maternal, protective, and extremely strong. An admirable monster. This awareness in my new role of motherhood was fierce--a primal, animalistic sense of power as the caregiver to a small being.
