This Pelican was one of three that were swooping, diving, catching fish and circling around for another approach. This one is just touching down to the beach, with wings still outstretched as it landed. Fascinating to watch, on Jamaica's South Coast, where the beach was wild and unkept, they entertained us for an hour or so while we ate lunch at Little Ochi.
I painted the bird in a blocky contemporary style, using a palette knife. The colour palette is calm and simple with lots of sandy cream colours, soft tints of blue-grey and turquoise-grey in the background suggest the movement of the sea.
The canvas is extremely good quality and was imported and custom made for the purpose. The piece can be hung without a frame and has deep sides painted cream.
