This is a photo copy of Dorr Bothwell's 1928 diary giving autobiographical accounts of the artist's time living in Samoa. The photocopies and and digital copies were donated to the Mendocino Art Center by Carolyn O'Bagy Davis in 2021. Ms. Davis is an author and historian who had copied Dorr's diaries in 2016 with the idea of a potential book project which was permanently placed on hold. Ms. Davis was given these papers by Helen Spencer Schlie who was a friend and caregiver for Dorr Bothwell for 10 years in Mesa, AZ. Helen passed away on December 25, 2017 at the age of 94. The MAC holds a hard copy of the photocopied diaries and digital copies, along with Carolyn's project notes. The original diaries are held in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. Please contact us for an online screening room to view entire diary.
