This is a framed original oil painting by Dorr Bothwell. Glued onto the back of the frame is a torn document stating the the piece had been consigned by the San Francisco Museum of Art and was titled, "Water Calligraphy". This frame must have been repurposed. This work was donated to the Mendocino Art Center as "Untitled". In a recorded lecture done at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996 Dorr Bothwell describes this painting as being titled "Perfumed Night" and states, "this is my favorite painting lost between then and now".
