From the Artist:
"Dutch Treat" was composed in three horizontal strips or areas. This was one of the most exciting and challenging quilts I have ever made. The fabrics themselves totally dictated how I used them. Most of them were collected during three teaching trips to the Netherlands. I already owned the Dutch Wax (Veritable Wax Hollandais) which looked like pieced blocks.
The top and bottom sections used tg5antique and reproduction Dutch fabrics as well as Dutch sheeting and clothing fabrics. Traditional blocks were selected. I felt those areas should be quilted by hand because of the traditional fabrics. These units were sent to Janet Dollard, my long time hand quilter in Indianapolis. I designed the quilting patterns.
The center section was composed mainly of new silk screened fabrics by Atelier Paapie. A few of the traditional fabrics were used for continuity. I felt the bold fabrics called for contemporary techniques like machine appliqué, free form machine piecing, machine quilting, and beading. I was totally responsible for all the work in the center section.
The three completed units were then joined using the quilt-as-you-go method. This can be evidenced on the back side by the change of fabrics. It's the only time I have used this technique.
