Vertical, oil on canvas - exhibited at Art Capital, at the Grand Palais, Paris, 2020. Inspired by the sea paintings of JMW Turner, this painting uses the abstract language of gesture, mark and surface. There is equal parts turbulence and luminosity in this work. Michael grew up on sailboats, sailing the waters of New England and Nantucket Island. The sea, sky and weather greatly influence his painting which aims not to be a representational depiction of landscape but rather a landscape (or seascape) of experience.
