Chrome & Canvas is designed to bring two creative traditions together: the craftsmanship and design of classic automobiles and the immediacy of plein air painting.


Set against Lake Mirror and the architecture of downtown Lakeland, the competition gives artists a unique opportunity to interpret one of Central Florida’s signature cultural events through their own artistic perspective.

Completed artwork will be judged following the painting period. Judges will consider: Composition Use of color and/or value Technical execution Interpretation of the environment Overall artistic impact Artists are encouraged to bring their own individual style and interpretation to the event. $750 / $400 / $250 / $100 possibility that there is a purchase award - to be shown at notta gallery for the remainder of the day for sale - 30% commission rate

Eligibility Criteria:


Chrome & Canvas is open to artists 18 years of age or older working in traditional, non-digital media.


Artists must:

  • Be able to attend and paint on-site at the Lake Mirror Classic in Lakeland, Florida on Saturday, October 17, 2026
  • Create their competition artwork primarily during the designated plein air painting period
  • Work in traditional media such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel, charcoal, drawing media, or mixed traditional media
  • Provide their own easel, art materials, painting surface, and outdoor setup
  • Submit examples of previous artwork as part of the application
  • Agree to have their artwork photographed and their participation documented for event and promotional purposes

Artists of all experience levels are welcome to apply; however, space may be limited and applications may be reviewed based on quality of work and suitability for a live plein air competition.


Digital artwork, photography, AI-generated artwork, and artwork substantially completed before the event are not eligible.

Application Requirements:


Applicants must submit:

  • 3 examples of recent artwork that represent their current style and ability
  • Artist name and contact information
  • City and state of residence
  • Primary medium
  • Short artist bio or statement — approximately 100 words or less
  • Website and/or social media link if available

Submitted artwork does not need to depict automobiles or plein air subjects. Work samples are used only to evaluate the artist’s overall quality, style, and readiness for the live competition.

Rules and Terms:


Artwork must be created primarily on-site during the competition.


Artists may choose their own subject and composition within the designated Lake Mirror Classic event area.

The competition will start at 8 am and the paintings need to be handed in for judging by 130 pm. 


Artists must provide their own:

  • Painting or drawing supplies
  • Easel
  • Surface or support
  • Brushes and tools
  • Outdoor setup
  • Water or solvents as needed

Artists are encouraged to bring sun protection, water, seating, and any other supplies necessary for working outdoors.
