On the second Saturday of September 2015—September 12—the Valley Fire began, devastating 76,000 acres of forest and wildlife, destroying over 2,000 structures including 1,300 homes, and claiming five lives.

Valley Fire impacts and recovery have been part of the Middletown Unified School District community life since, with focus on rebuilding, healing trauma, and shifting attitudes and approaches towards forest care and fire mitigation.
The MAC was shaped by the Valley Fire experience, offering a place for healing through creative expression and engagement.
