Mid-20th century Nishiki Daruma wedding doll (female), Himedarma. This roly-poly type doll is crafted with a gofun (crushed oyster shell paste) face, glass eyes, and brocade fabrics in the kimekomi style. Wedding dolls of this type are typically presented in pairs, male and female, symbolizing a matrimonial couple. In Japan, it is traditionally believed that a maiden who receives a Himedarma doll will marry within two years.
