Mid-20th century doll representing a geisha performing with a kotsuzumi, a small, hourglass-shaped, two-headed drum traditionally used in Noh and Kabuki theatre. The kotsuzumi, a variant of the larger tsuzumi, features horsehide drumheads bound with rope. Held against the left shoulder and manipulated with the right hand, the performer adjusts the pitch by subtly squeezing the ropes while striking the head with her hand, producing a range of nuanced, soft sounds.
The doll is composed of hand-painted bisque ceramic and embellished with human hair, glass eyes, and fine brocade silk garments. The hairstyle is styled in a traditional manner and adorned with decorative resin kanzashi (hairpins), evoking the refined elegance of the performing arts.
Mounted on a wooden stand.
