Mid-20th-century wooden Daruma doll representing a distinctive fusion of Daruma iconography with the expressive aesthetics of sōsaku kokeshi (creative kokeshi). The central Daruma figure is carved in the round, balancing a taiko drum and a bachi (drumstick) atop its head. The assemblage is mounted on a small, circular base. While traditional Daruma dolls are typically crafted from papier-mâché, this example reflects a mid-20th-century trend among kokeshi artisans to reinterpret folkloric motifs in wood—embracing individual creativity while preserving cultural symbolism.
