Mid-20th-century wooden Daruma doll representing a unique fusion of the Daruma iconography with the expressive aesthetics of sōsaku kokeshi (creative kokeshi). A central Daruma figure is carved in the round, balancing a shamisen atop its head, upon which seven smaller Daruma dolls are aligned in a whimsical procession. The assemblage is mounted on a small square base, painted with stylized characters. While traditionally Daruma dolls are crafted from papier-mâché, this example reflects the mid-20th-century trend among kokeshi artisans to reinterpret folkloric motifs in wood, embracing individual creativity while retaining cultural symbolism.
