Gift of John A. Welsh, III '59
The many themes of Chagall’s work included the artist’s personal history, abstract flying figures, elements of Jewish tradition, animals, and peasant life. In this dreamlike composition, two faces stand opposite to a large sphere with references to the natural world above and below in a color sparse landscape. The title “Le Repos,” seemingly refers to the dual figures resting in an imagined and serene setting under an abstract sun.
