Artist: Marc Chagall (Russian, 1887-1985)
Russian-French artist who worked in a wide variety of medium including painting, illustration, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and printmaking. Chagall is know as a pioneer of the modernist movement, as well as the one of the more important Jewish artists. Much of Chagall's inspiration is rooted in dreams, the study of subconcious mind, and Eastern European Jewish folk culture. He spent time in Soviet Belarus during the years of World War I, and became one of the country's most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avant-garde, founding the Vitebsk Arts College before moving to Paris in 1922.
