Gift of John Andrew MacMahon '95

In his black-and-white ink and collage works, Mark Thomas Gibson explores contemporary American culture through a comic book vernacular, drawing on his multifaceted identity as a Black male, a professor, and an American history enthusiast. "Feeding Grounds" takes inspiration from President Trump’s inauguration and the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA. In this artwork, only partial legs and feet are visible shown above water. Around the feet we see four flags, including the American flag, half immersed in water. Gibson incorporates death, demons, and violence to critique the Trump administration and white supremacists. His illustrations may use a binary color palette to emphasize a notion of right and wrong.
