Artist: Mark Thomas Gibson (American, b. 1980)
Mark Thomas Gibson focuses on using the language of comics as a tool for social justice. His work involves graphic novels, consisting of black and white pen drawings, and colorful paintings developed from imageries chosen from his books
Gibson earned a BFA from Cooper Union, New York, and an MFA from Yale University, New Haven, CT. His work has been exhibited internationally, including in solo exhibitions at Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, University of the Arts, Philadelphia; Fredericks & Freiser, New York; and Loyal in Stockholm; and in group shows at Paul Kasmin Gallery and Salon 94 in New York, among others. His honors include a grant from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts and residencies at Flying Horse Print Shop, MacDowell, and Fountainhead. Gibson is currently an Assistant Professor of Painting at Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he lives.
