Jan Matulka played a distinctive role in the development of American Modernism striving to create a new genre of Cubism based on distortion of forms. From 1908 to 1917 he studied at the National Academy of Design. He received the first ever Joseph Pulitzer National Traveling Scholarship, and from 1917 to 1918, he painted his travels around the United States and Caribbean.
