Artist: Jan Matulka (Czech-American, 1890-1972)
American (born Bohemia, Czech Republic) painter and illustrator. Matulka graduated from the National Academy of Design in New York City (1917). He was the first recipient of the Joseph Pulitzer National Traveling Scholarship. The subject matter of his paintings was influenced by his travels, including Native American cultures of the Southwest, his family farm in Czechoslovakia, Germany, and France. His work includes natural landscapes, jazz-influenced cityscapes, and abstract pieces. He contributed to the Modernism movement.
