This scene was adapted from a nativity in Thomas Aquinas’s Golden Chain, dating to the fourteenth century and thought, originally, to have been made in Oxford. The manuscript is now held in Durham Cathedral. This particular arrangement of figures was seen commonly in English art of the period.
