Lincoln Cathedral cloisters, centre, once had flower beds. They were filled partly with sweet-smelling flowers and partly with plants associated by tradition and legend with the Blessed Virgin Mary, in whose name the Cathedral is dedicated. Those plants are illustrated in the border, including marigold (Mary’s Gold) and Pulmonaria officinalis (Mary and Joseph, with its blue flowers for the former and red for the latter). The border is fully gilded with many layers of 24 carat gold leaf and took more than 100 hours to produce.
