Tina Cantelmi, Artist Bio
Art and design have always been an integral part of my life — from creative writing, painting, fashion, and sculpture to shaping pottery on the wheel or by hand. I began studying art at an early age, and in high school, I spent countless hours in the ceramics studio. By age 17, I earned the National Scholastic Art Award and a solo exhibit at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts, in my hometown of Bethlehem, Pa
At the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, where I earned a B.F.A., I began to focus on becoming a painter. Based on the works I produced there, I earned a scholarship to the Yale School of Painting in New York City. My love for fashion and, more pressingly, the need of a paycheck led me to study at The Fashion Institute of Technology, where I began journalism classes. Working my way up through the ranks, I eventually landed an editor's post at Women's Wear Daily. As a magazine editor, I was provided the opportunity to continue to view art, design and fashion from early periods to contemporary times firsthand.
I find abstract concepts and the interplay of color, surface, depth and light most engaging to explore, and the color field landscapes of artists like Richard Diebenkorn, David Hockney and Georgia O’Keefe most directly inspirational.
My most recent paintings explore ever changing themes and locations, bringing layers of light and shape and a color-charged palette to dynamic, imaginative compositions to either rev or calm the senses. I prefer to allow the viewer to decide and choose specific objects and references. My works are in private and corporate collections from the Lehigh Valley to Boston, Brooklyn, Seattle and South Florida.
