Artist: Fiona Smith
Fiona Smith's paintings of birds in elaborately-patterned interior settings make these creatures part of the family. She is based in Sydney, Australia.
She grew up on the outskirts of a national park in Sydney, where wildlife outnumbered the human playmates around her. With no urban playgrounds in sight, her childhood revolved around forming bonds with the feathered and furry creatures that wandered onto her parents' property, nestled along McCarrs Creek in Sydney's Northern Beaches.
Fiona left this idyllic setting to pursue a journalism degree at Bathurst in New South Wales' Central West, and later returned to Sydney to build a career in media. She became a well-known business reporter and columnist for The Australian Financial Review. During this period, she also studied part-time at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, while attending workshops and classes with some of Australia's leading contemporary artists.
Today, Fiona works full-time as an artist, focusing mainly on intricate, patterned bird paintings. Her oil works often feature birds in indoor settings, perched on furniture or objects, and set against vintage or antique wallpapers. Through this, she captures the birds' natural beauty while revealing a glimpse of their unique personalities.
