POLAR BEAR FACTS:
1. They are the largest bear in the world and the Arctic's top predator.
2. Since they spend most of their lives on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean, polar bears are the only bear species to be considered marine animals.
3. Sea ice is a necessity to polar bears because they rely on it for traveling, hunting, resting, mating, and even in some areas maternal dens.
4. Polar bears are actually black with translucent fur, not white! It only appears to be white because it reflects visible light.
5. 50% of a polar bears time is spent hunting for food!
6. They can smell their prey over a mile away and can even detect a seal in the water beneath 3ft of compacted snow.
7. They have 42 razor sharp teeth with canines larger than a grizzly bear.
8. They are talented swimmers that can sustain a pace of 6mph and for days at a time.
9. Due to the ongoing loss of their sea ice habitat resulting from climate change, polar bears are forced to spend more time on land and meet their unfortunate fate with humans.
10. In addition to climate change and humans, other threats to the polar bears include commercial activities, pollution, disease, inadequate habitat protection, and unregulated hunting.
