ALL 🌳 FACTS:
1. Rainforests are found in sub-tropical & temperate zones.
2. The Amazon Basin contains the world's largest rainforest. The 2nd largest is in Central Africa's Congo Basin.
3. While tropical rainforests cover < 3% of Earth's land mass, they house more than 1/2 the world's terrestrial species.
4. Rainforests are essential to life on Earth - providing air, water, medicine, food, shelter, but also 1 of the best natural defenses against climate change.
5. Compounds in rainforest plants are already used to treat malaria, heart disease, bronchitis, hypertension, rheumatism, diabetes, muscle tension, arthritis, glaucoma, dysentery, & tuberculosis among others.
6. Human activities - the clearing & burning of tropical forests & peatlands - account for about 10% of greenhouse gasses.
7. Tropical forests are being destroyed by humans at a rate of 31,000 square miles a year - about 40 football fields/min.
8. All of deforestation is driven by human activity with the biggest drivers being industrial & subsistence agriculture & cattle ranching.
9. Local & indigenous communities are often the best stewards of forests. There is a growing movement to help these communities win the legal right to manage their traditional lands vs the government ruining them.
10. Look for rainforest destruction free products, companies will be pressured to adopt policies that better protect forests. (Look for the Rainforest Alliance Certified Seal)
