Year of Wildlife - Week 23: OCEAN 🌊
✨"We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one." - Jacques Cousteau
✨"Why is it that scuba divers & surfers are some of the strongest advocates of ocean conservation? Because they've spent time in & around the ocean, & they've personally seen the beauty, the fragility, & even the degradation of our planet's blue heart." - Sylvia Earle
✨"We dive not to escape life, but for life not to escape us." - Unknown

ALL 🌊 FACTS:
1.The ocean contains 50-80% of all life on Earth & only 1% is legally protected.
2.About 70% of our oxygen is produced by the ocean & over 3 billion people rely on the ocean for their livelihood.
3.Only 12% of the oil spills are in headlines while 3x as much oil is already being carried to sea via road, river & drainpipe runoff.
4.Humans dump about 17.6 billion lbs of plastic into the ocean per year & will out weigh fish by 2050!
5.There is already so much ocean junk that they have naturally formed into 5 garbage patches.
6.Ocean plastic is broken down to microplastic through sun exposure. When it degrades, in 400 years, it will release chemicals which will further contaminate the ocean life.
7.With each load of laundry, more than 700,000 synthetic microfibers are washed into our waterways.
8.About 70% of ocean garbage actually sinks to the deep sea seafloor making them irretrievable.
9.In 2004, scientists counted 146 hypoxic zones in the world's oceans (low oxygen concentration). By 2008, it was 405 hypoxic zones.
10.The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021 to 2030 is to strengthen the international cooperation needed to develop the scientific research & innovative technologies that can connect ocean science with the needs of society.
