Beacon on Gay Street
I photographed this scene during Knoxville’s monthly Art Crawl. After walking up and down Gay Street, watching people move between galleries and storefronts, I made my way toward the Tennessee Theatre knowing I wanted to capture it at night. Of the images I took that evening, this one stood out for its color. The variety of neon and lit signs layered the street in light and energy.
There was no show at the theatre that night, yet the vertical Tennessee sign still commanded attention. The street was active with passing cars and pedestrians, but the theatre remained the brightest point in the scene. It felt like a beacon Knoxville proudly holds up whether the doors are open or not.
As I painted, I leaned into that contrast. Some areas remain detailed while others soften into abstraction, reflecting the movement and atmosphere of the evening. I plan to create another painting from a different angle captured that same night. That piece carries a quieter mood, with fewer lights and more emphasis on the surrounding architecture. Together, they explore different personalities of the same landmark.
