Biography
Shirley M. Tarrant graduated from the University of Delaware in 1957, with a degree in education. She taught elementary school in Newark, while also supporting a number of community activism projects. Tarrant established the Newark Girls Club, chaired the Delaware Health Facilities Authority, served on the Board of Trustees for Christiana Care Health Services, and was President of the Suburban County Hospital Task Force. The Task Force “oversaw the organization during the lengthy struggle that resulted in the construction of the current Christiana Hospital.”
Tarrant was honored with the Newark Chamber of Commerce Wallace Johnson ‘Outstanding Person of the Year’ Award (1975) and the University of Delaware’s Outstanding Alumnus Award (1985). Outside of her volunteer and education careers, Tarrant enjoyed boating, fishing, and was an avid fan of University of Delaware athletic teams.
