Giverny, a large-scale watercolor is one in a series of larger works on paper inspired by the gardens of Claude Monet in Giverny, France. These works feature white, open space of the thick, Arches paper with energetic notes of color that respond to the grasses, flowers and plant life surrounding the ponds in the garden. Michael traveled to Giverny during an extended residency in France, walked the grounds and sat by the pond and made a sketch. Monet has long been an influence on Michael's work for his use of color in the landscape and arriving at Giverny renewed his passion for the artist's work.
