Statement
I can easily call my style of painting impressionist-inspired. A painterly style of loose brushwork and generous paint application. Outdoors instead of in the studio - and so on.
What to Look For?
My primary medium is oil paint. I do believe that oil paint is, however, best used to create paintings that look like paintings. Not photo-realist. Not illustration or copyist disciplines. Not confusing painting with drawing. A painterly painting is something different.
- In my paintings you will find:Generous brushwork and paint use for a loose, painterly appearance;
- A heightened sense of the environment in my landscapes.
- Nostalgia for experiences in places visited and people met;
- Sometimes a solitary experience. Always personal.
Oil Paint is a Specific Medium
I prefer to use oil paint to make something that is created with paint, brush and knife. I like to think of oil paint as liquid clay. It is tactile, malleable and can be layered in textures that are varied and descriptive. I can see no reason why oil paint should be treated like a drawing medium. Therefore I try to show the nature of the medium as well as the subject. The way I do this is through loose, abstract shapes arranged appropriately. That is a painting.
To improve my art makes me better able to express myself on the canvas. Without feeling and communication of that emotion there cannot be real art. The only way for me is to follow what gives me joy - that is painting. One day at a time.
