A painted portrait of pansies doing their thing in a tangle of foliage and blossoms—deep purples, golds, and creamy whites—all blooming in a lively, light-filled garden, this pastel shares not only the beauty of these resilient little flowers, but the feeling of standing barefoot in the flowerbed among hardy plants that have weathered every storm with grace. Pansies may look dainty, but make no mistake—they're survivors.
Pansies are tougher than they look, resilient little faces that keep blooming through wind, cold, and whatever life tosses at them.
This 9x12 pastel began with an impressionistic gouache underpainting washed loosely across buttercup yellow pastel paper (I used PastelMat) mounted to archival board. Why yellow? Why bother with an underpainting, applying color that may or may not show through in the finished artwork? That bright, playful underlayer sets the mood—color seeps through in unexpected places, creating a soft glow behind the blossoms and a tangle of suggestion around the stems and leaves. Over that foundation, I built the pansies in soft pastel: velvety purples, warm golds, touches of white and maroon, all nestled into a lively green niche in the garden.
Instead doing a still life (oh, so STILL) I opted to paint these in their element, swaying in the breeze, catching some rays, just being flowers. There's silent energy here, the gentle chaos of real life. Some flowers are at their peak, others are just opening, and a few, bedraggled and on their way out. Theirs is a story of beauty, resilience, love, and constancy, all in one ordinary patch of dirt that could stand to be weeded.
The interplay between the loose gouache underpainting and the more defined pastel marks adds depth and mystery. As you look closer, you’ll see hints of that sunny yellow ground and unexpected color shifts peeking through the leaves and shadows—it’s like discovering new details in the garden every time you walk past.
“Garden Heartbeats” is perfect for anyone who loves floral art with a sense of resilience, a reminder that strength doesn’t always shout. Sometimes, it simply blooms, quietly flowers, season after season. Hang this piece where you need a touch of color and a reminder that it's still a beautiful world, then let these small hearts beat joy into your space.
If you’d like to bring that quiet resilience—and a whole lot of color—into your own space, think of this painting as a small patch of garden you don’t have to water, a daily nudge toward constancy, love, and staying rooted in what matters.
