Joan Geary was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1950. She is a visual artist working predominantly in oil and mixed media painting, but in the past has worked in welded steel and found object sculpture.
Geary's current paintings are rooted in memory, fusing reality, invention and chance. Her mastery of light, texture and tonality imbue the works with a vitality and at the same time, a spirituality.
As an avid student of the Dutch Masters, the Hudson River School painters and the French and American Impressionists, Geary seeks to understand how they accomplished their use of light.
"I look to Rembrandt, Bierstadt, Monet and many others who each painted light in totally different ways. I want to learn from their individual expertise and see how I can carry forward the groundwork they laid while making my work relevant for today."
Geary's work has been shown in juried competitions around the Chicago area and is in private and corporate collections. Her work will be featured in a book titled Cold Wax Medium: Techniques. Concepts and Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin, launching in 2017.
Joan Geary maintains her studio in Burr Ridge, Illinois.
