James Norman Paukert is a award winning traditionally trained canvas painter with 30 years experience as a freelance commission artist . Having painted many 1st place show vehicles, dragsters and tricked out motorcycles along with his traditional canvas and mural work . James has perfected his knowledge and techniques with canvas painting and exotic archival paints on metal .
His most recent work is :The Reflective Metal Paintings Series [Exploring Beyond the Canvas]Now combining his traditional canvas training with modern archival mediums on metal . Not just paint on metal , James works the image in relief onto the surface then builds transparent layers to create great depth & energetic movement. This also gives his paintings a duality. In room light they look like a beautiful painting but when in direct light, such as sunlight or spot light the image worked onto the surface appears . The depth increases with shifting and movement . It’s like two amazing paintings in one.
With his Brushed Metal Painting series: The brushed metal base adds a lustrous uniform, more subtler shifting glow to the scenery. Capturing the energetic nature of sunsets and water
Statement
Observing , learning and study of all aspects of a subject is essential to creating my art , as is the interaction with the chosen media . I enjoy working in modern and traditional mediums and materials . It is a honor to share what is discovered .
Metal has been used since the Renaissance as a substrate for painting and gilding . I am excited to bring its luster and shifting nature into my new work the Brushed Metal and Reflective Metal paintings . It adds qualities that are unattainable on canvas. It works exceptionally well for capturing the living energetic nature of seascapes/sunsets, water and fire elements. When added to abstracts the dimension of depth can be striking.
For the Reflective Metal Paintings I love the physicality of working relief onto the metals surface . Carving my vision into it's surface , All that shifting light and form ! Next translucent colors enhancing the depth . Finally I get to brush in the fine details . It's a wonderful combination of sculpting and painting on the finished piece .
The Brushed Metal Paintings are not as intensely reflective as the Reflective Metal Paintings. Straight line brush finishing the metal adds a continuous lustrous glow to land and seascapes series. Transparent paint then opaque detail letting that base metal show through.
I have traveled an observe stunning locals near and far taking it all in . I love noting the subtle nuances and energies , there is so much in nature and people that our existence offers. At the studio I remember these experiences and paint! Some are painted with realism , some with impressionism or a blend of both. All with love.
I love representing in paint all those wondrous things my photography can not convey .
