“How Raven Stole the Sun.” Last May, my two sisters and I were on a beach in Southern Oregon when we became aware of a huge sun halo, which happens when the light interacts with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Later, I photographed the Raven soaring over the beach below, and I decided the two images belonged together. “How Raven Stole the Sun” is much-told story by the Coast Native tribes that tells the story of how Raven caught a glowing ball in its mouth and brought light to a dark world.
The image evokes the legend of Raven, who captured the sun to bring light into the world. Soft, dark tones surrounding a central light invoke an ethereal atmosphere where mythology & reality converge. It is printed on transparency film & enhanced with 24K gold leaf, which adds a shimmering quality.
