In the winter of 2014, the snow piled high as storm after storm pummeled the Eastern Seaboard. West of Boston, just a few miles, is the town of Natick, MA and in that town, purchased and preserved by the town, is a 300 year old working farm. This farm now serves as an educational venue for the school children of the area where they can see and experience the farming and animal sources that provide their food.
As part of this experience, the children can sign up to help with animal chores and various other aspects of the farming process. Among the products that the farm produces is maple syrup from the forest of maple trees that populate the property.
This tree served as a demonstration to the kids on the process of tapping a tree for the maple sap. My grandson had the distinctive honor of helping with the tap.
