Christa Brandenburg
McMinnville, OR
Christa Brandenburg is a Pacific Northwest- based artist.
MessagePrimarily an oil painter since retirement in 2022, my work springs from focused intention in series, and attention to light and edges in individual works.
While in practice as a mental health and addictions counselor, I maintained a home studio, taking select workshops at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology.
During five years of study at Humboldt State University, in Arcata, California, I was deeply influenced by photographers Thomas Knight and Thomas Cooper. I developed a refined understanding of composition and value, particularly in black-and-white photography, figure drawing, and painting. The Van Duzer Scholarship for fine art was awarded for my work as an undergraduate.
Raised in a military family, I grew up on the US Atlantic Coast, in Germany, and in Iran. As a third culture kid, many years were spent away from television, and immersed in travel, the natural world, and history. My work and art have been, and are, concerned with place, the universal in the particular, and change itself.
The Pacific Northwest has been home for over 30 years.
Statement
My work holds varying levels of representation of light on form and evidence of experimentation with materials. I use solvent-free oil painting approaches to cultivate presence, see in, and uncover that spark of being that calms, surprises and quickens the spirit. Energetic marks contrast fields of color, mingling value and movement. Understatement, glitchy shifts of point of view and depth of field create rhythmic, sometimes shimmery moments of transparency and opacity, resonant of the process of personal and societal reappraisal underway for many of us.
