The painted self-portrait offers a very analogue method of self reflection and analysis, in this era dominated by selfies and the highly curated digital personas that shape the ways in which we see ourselves. With the current climate of uncertainty, anxiety and isolation that is permeating our lives, it’s an opportune time to delve into processes of introspection and self discovery. I feel completely present while painting, and there is a stillness of mind that is like meditating. A sense of otherness persists while the portrait gradually emerges, until suddenly the paint becomes something more and the gaze holds an uncanny sense of familiarity. I hope to convey an authentic snapshot of myself encapsulated within this strange moment in time.
