
Bio
Garie Waltzer, a New York City native, holds a BFA in painting and an MFA in photography from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She relocated to the Midwest in the early 1970s, where she developed the photography program at Cuyahoga Community College, serving as Coordinator of Photography and educating students in the Department of Visual Communication + Design for many years.
Waltzer’s photographic work delves into the cultural landscape of urban spaces, capturing detailed evocations of place and time. Her art has been widely exhibited and is housed in permanent collections of esteemed institutions such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Robert B. Menschel Media Center at LightWork, along with numerous corporate and private collections.
The artist’s accolades include grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, and fellowships at LightWork and Vermont Studio Center. She received the 2012 Cleveland Arts Prize, recognizing her contributions to photography. Her commissioned projects range from photo essays for the George Gund Foundation and The Cultural Landscape Foundation to a private landscape book.
Waltzer’s recent exhibitions, including the Living City project showcased in Singapore and Hong Kong, highlight her ongoing exploration of contemporary cultural landscapes. Currently, she is developing an artist book focusing on urban spaces in Vietnam. Garie Waltzer remains based in Cleveland, Ohio, where she continues her impactful work in photography.
