David Rankin is an award-winning watercolor artist known for his work in both public and private collections across the United States and India. His talent has earned him recognition through over 150 museum exhibitions and features in prestigious art publications, including North Light's series, Splash: The Best of Watercolor and Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing. Rankin's art promotes the conservation and appreciation of the natural world, and since 1990, he has served on the board of the Society of Animal Artists, advocating for wildlife and environmental conservation.
As a leading modern master of transparent watercolor, David passionately engages audiences through his lectures, demonstrations, and workshops. His artwork reflects a deep connection with nature, which he considers his primary instructor, complemented by his lifelong yoga practice that helps him access inspiration. He often expresses, "Nature, as a subject, is too vast and intricate for any one artist. Each of us sees and paints only a tiny fragment of her expanse. As a focus in my work, She is an endless mystery."
Rankin began his artistic journey at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he graduated with honors in 1967. Following his studies, he had a successful career in notable Cleveland businesses, including Marschalk Advertising Agency and American Greetings, while also cofounding the Light of Yoga Society in Cleveland, merging his artistic and spiritual pursuits.
Beyond his exhibitions and teaching, David has authored several works and lectured extensively on watercolor techniques, establishing himself as one of the most effective watercolor teachers globally. He emphasizes the importance of detail and a respectful understanding of the medium to enhance aspiring artists' skills.
Rankin views creativity through a unique lens: “I perceive the world around me through a type of mental watercolor filter. I see a wet reflection on a street, the fractured glint of sunlight on water, sunlight off the surface of a peacock's neck, or grasses in a field, and I instantly try to visualize how I would recreate that effect on paper… with the fewest possible strokes.” His paintings, rich in complexity, often consist of simple brushstrokes that utilize the natural texture of the surface to create depth and detail.
In summary, David Rankin is a significant figure in contemporary art, recognized not only for his exceptional watercolors but also for his dedication to education and conservation. His enduring passion continues to inspire artists and enthusiasts alike to explore the wonders of nature through watercolor.
