Artist: Ras Ishi Butcher
Ras Ishi Butcher is a self-taught, multi-award-winning Barbadian artist. His paintings often reflect concern regarding issues of race, identity and social injustices. In a style he has labelled as “Fauvist”, (in reference to Matisse and Derain’s movement where colour theory takes central stage) Butcher uses and manipulates different materials in his works, giving them a style that transitions between painting and craft.
He has been producing art since the early 1980s, is recognised throughout the Caribbean and internationally. He currently teaches in the Bachelor of Fine Arts programme at the Barbados Community College.
