Arts in Medicine
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Since its inception in 2012, Baton Rouge General's Arts in Medicine program has provided a vast collection of visual arts to enhance the culture of care within.
MessageThe Arts in Medicine Collection contains a variety of artworks to include but not limited to paintings and photography for sale by numerous local artists; donated works, such as an enormous collection of over 300 pieces by the late New York Artist, Mari Lyons; works created by our Artists in Residence, Volunteer Artists, and Patient-created art. All works within this collection are shared across the Baton Rouge General Community with the intent to embrace The Importance of Art in Living:
"Art, in all its forms, created as, and alongside of, Man's birth, was original only once. Passed from generation to generation, it begs the attention of those who will treat it kindly, roughly, with or without emotion, with or without fidelity, but not without recognition. Then importance of preserving and passing along knowledge, skills, and culture is incumbent upon us all; no matter the length of our days. It is critical to thought, emotion, and the ability to fight for our very survival, in that it gives us hope, which in turn, gives us purpose, which ultimately empowers us with the element of determination, in both our spirit and body, to heal.
Naum Gabo and his brother, Antoine Pevsner, summed it up best:
'Art should attend us everywhere that life flows and acts . . . in order that the flame to live should not be extinguished in mankind' - Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner - The Realistic Manifesto - Moscow, 5 August, 1920"
