Stephen D Stewart is a weaver of color, emotion and movement. The dance between light and dark informs the way in which he builds his paintings.

The layered tension of his vibrant color palette spills onto the canvas brought to life by the frenzy of his brushstrokes. A tug of war between the colors begins to mold a world of electric intensity. The dichotomous nature of light and dark are at the heart of this push and pull within his oeuvre.

Stephen D Stewart thinks of his paintings, typically large in scale, as individual people. His works to him are like a family of individuals that sometimes get along, other times not, and occasionally get to spend time together. They in his mind have the ability to stand on their own yet are able to compliment one another. Currently, he is working on two major Series that delve into the complex nature of humanity biologically, socially, and internally.

Stephen is a lover of classical music and all of his works are created to violin and cello concertos. The intensity of these movements connect him to the paintings creating a certain musicality in his works. This is a source of inspiration and a kind of muse, if you will.
