Statement

I’m a fine artist and illustrator based in Barbados, who creates mixed-media pieces with ink, watercolour and gouache. My practice revolves around creating intimate portraits of women where I bring the world of their inner emotions to the forefront.

My love for storytelling and the beautiful black and white illustrations found in the books of my childhood, inevitably led me to begin exploring with pen and ink. I use either dip pens or fineliner pens to achieve the delicate cross-hatching in my drawings. Sometimes I already have a story I want to tell, other times it unfolds with each mark that I make. The process for me has become intuitive and meditative.

Central to my work is the exploration of vulnerability, strength and the depth of our many facets that aren’t often seen or understood, not even by us, which we can all connect with. Our lives are a tapestry of stories woven together by our experiences, emotions, dreams and faith. What started as an expression of my thoughts and feelings, evolved through the years into a desire to spin deeper narratives into the images that I create.
