"Architectural Series I & II"
Watercolor, Collage, Colored Pencil and Crayons 1996
A degree in art and a background in interior design led me to painting in watercolors in 1976. My early paintings were conservative landscapes but after viewing an exhibit on the Bauhaus, a German school of architecture in the early part of this century, she began her first architectural series.
The present series, Architectural Illusions, draws the viewer in from a distance with its bold color fields, then reveals windows, doors, stucco and brick facades, beams and tiles. “These works flirt with the viewer’s mind like an optical game,” Herzog says. “The perspective also changes, depending on how the work is viewed - horizontally or vertically, as most of my work can be viewed either way.”
