Plate, 7.7 inches diameter. Black with polychrome clobbering. Printed pattern and maker's marks for "Windsor" by S. Fielding & Co. The pattern features a picturesque view of Windsor Castle, seen from the River Thames. Superimposed over the bottom third of the plate at a diagonal angle, is a wooden trellis with vines of roses blooming pink and yellow.

Simon Fielding was a manufacturer of earthenware and majolica at the Railway Pottery, Stoke. He had been a partner in the previous company F. Hackney & Co. In 1879 the partnership was dissolved and Simon Fielding (d. 1906) continued on his own account. Within a few years, however, the bailiffs came in and it was Simon's son Abraham, who stepped in to save the company. In June 1892, Simon Fielding retired from the business and Abraham continued on his own account. In 1912 the Railway Works was renamed The Devon Pottery and Fielding developed the famous 'Crown Devon' name.
