Vase, 5.5 inches tall. Brown transfer with polychrome clobbering and gilding. Printed and impressed maker's marks for F. W. Grove. The Rd. No. indicates a pattern registration date of 1885. The impressed Rd. No. indicates a shape registration date of 1885. The painted pattern number is "3598." This pattern is part of a series featuring cartouches with images laid over fruit and foliage. On one side of the vase, several rectangular cards connected at the bottom left and fanned out are laid over a leafy branch. The top card features an image of a young girl in a pinafore. On the rim above is a single pomegranate fruit on a branch. The other side of the pitcher features a diamond cartouche with an image of two sailboats on the sea laid over stalks of grass. The rim above features a single bloom on a leafy stem. The handles are decorated with fragments of leaves. Gilding decorates the rim, neck, handles, and base.

The Palissy Works, Chancery Lane were erected in 1862 by Mr. R. H. Grove for the purpose of decorating, not manufacturing chinaware. In 1867 he retired and was succeeded by his son Mr. Frederick Wedgwood Grove and his partner Mr. John Stark, who continued them for decorating purposes alone, until 1867 when they commenced manufacturing, having increased the premises for the purpose and erected the necessary kilns and machinery. They manufactured earthenware only. In this all the usual dinner dessert toilet and other services and domestic articles were produced and of all degrees of decoration from plain and printed up to enameled and gilt varieties. Spirit and wine show barrels or casks are also specialties.
