Platter with shaped and painted handles, 15.5 by 10.25 inches. Black transfer. Maker is John Thomas Hudden. The Registration Diamond on the reverse gives a date of 3 October 1878 when Hudden registered a printed design. The pattern consists of four cartouches of different shapes. They are filled with flowers, and in one case a sheet pattern is overlaid under tall stalks of blossoms. Behind the cartouches is a branch with blossoms. The flowering vine in the partial border has two birds clinging to it.

Hudden established a factory in Stafford Street in 1859 and then at the British Anchor Works in Anchor Road in c.1874-1884. He was recorded as an 'important manufacturer.' In 1881, Hudden was 65 years old and his works employed 100 people. Hudden was made bankrupt in 1883 and around 1884 the works were taken over and became the British Anchor Pottery Co. Ltd.
