In the winter months, living on the highveld around Johannesburg, there were always grass fires burning, (referred to by the Afrikaans name - Veldfire), and the air would be a haze of smoke. This created stunning sunsets and sunrises and the omnipresent, comforting, smell of smoke. These are some of my earliest conscious memories of living in South Africa.
